Rhythmatism - by Cheryl J

Umbrella - Rihanna or Mandy Moore - which do you prefer?

Even though the song has been doing the rounds for a while now Rihanna's Umbrella has been getting a lot of airplay lately. I have just recently discovered Mandy Moore did a cover version.

I've put up both versions, which one do you prefer?

Rihanna - Umbrella (original)

Mandy Moore - Umbrella (cover version)

I think the Mandy Moore song captures the emotion of the song better and I like the mellow sound. I think the chorus of the song really epitomises what friendship should be about, being there through the bad times as well as the good and means a lot to me personally at the moment.

When the sun shines, we’ll shine together

Told you I'll be here forever
Said I'll always be a friend
Took an oath I'ma stick it out till the end
Now that it's raining more than ever
Know that we'll still have each other
You can stand under my umbrella
You can stand under my umbrella

I think you are right, Moore's is the better of the two. She actually gives it a little more substance.

But my fav version would have to be Hillary Clinton. Really Long Link

I think Moore's sound has grown up with her as well, she no longer sounds like a little teeny bopper.

Oh my God, I forgot about that! Think of the children Ruby!

Love you Cheryl.

BTW - Mandy Moore

i like Rihanna's for the umph and the beat... just so catchy!

and i guess once I hear the original version, I pretty much don't like the remakes.. unless they really really are exceptional ... i.e. david cook's cover of Mariah's song.

ewww no that mandy moore version is not my cup of tea at all!

rihanna did it with far more strength and sass

although Ruby is right" Hillary and Obama did it best! haha

I really like both, they sound like completely different songs. If I was in a dancy upbeat mood I'd go for the Rihanna song but if I was in a more laidback mood it would be Mandy. It's good to see someone do a cover that is a complete reinterpretation instead of something that sounds almost identical.

You're right, the slower version seems to fit the lyrics more which is strange as it's not the original. I'm gong to be singing this all day now.

How damn sexy is that Rihanna?!

It is gorgeous. Mandy actually did a whole album of covers, it didn’t do to well but I liked it. I found it funny how she said she didn’t listen to top 40 stuff, when that is exactly what she has to owe for her success with In My Pocket, I Wanna Be with You etc..

I don't care about the song, I just wanna be under Rihanna ... heh heh heh

Hi Hatchy, Love you too x

Hi Hazel, I never much go for covers either but I really like this one. I think Mandy gives the song depth. which Mariah song? I make it a rule never to listen to her, she annoys tthe hell out of me!

Hi Morgan, I thought you'd like the Rihanna version better, it's definitely a catchy sassy tune. Yep the Hillary one's a winner

Johnny, all I can say is phwoar!

Hi Anon, I will have to check her other covers out. Now you have my interest piqued.

Raoul, I'm a straight woman and seeing her in that silver paint made me think almost the same thing...

Hmmm...I think it depends on what kinda mood I'm in. If i were out with my pals, Rihanna's version definitely rocks. However, if I were in a mellow mood or away from my pals...and I so miss them, I'll pop Mandy on

Rhianna rocks but I always used to listen to this song and think, 'these lyrics don't really suit the delivery." Then I saw that chick sing it on Australian Idol - I think she won it(don't know if she was pre or post- Mandy) and thought, "yes, that's how this song should be sung." My vote is with her version!

But don't take my word for it... I thought that other song of Rhianna's - "Shut Up and Drive" was about driving!! Seriously!

mm mandy does a good version...my fav will always be by All Time Low though...All Time Low - Umbrella on youtube
14. August 5th 2008 @ 12:42. Cheryl J Says:
Hi Lara, one is very dance oriented and the other is very much a listening while sipping a G&T and chilling kinda vibe.

Hi Jayne...you mean it's not about driving?! Ooh then it does take on a whole new meaning haha.

Hello Yoda76, the good old option 3 eh?

Thanks Stickman-X, I hadn't heard that before. Wow puts another whole new spin on it. That's great!
15. August 5th 2008 @ 12:55. Stickman-X- Says:
also, if ur more a fan of the dance orientated version, theres an even better version remixed by Seamus Haji. What Rihanna should have sounded like.....i thnk neways (there also seems to be a million other remixes with artists like the Freemasons and Paul Emauel....but this one is my fav)
Seamus Haji remix

rihanna pwns mandy
17. August 7th 2008 @ 15:37. Eve Says:
And i still think shut up and drive is about driving???
18. August 7th 2008 @ 23:24. Jayne Kearney Says:
From "Shut Up and Drive":

'So if you feel me let me know, know, know
Come on now what you waiting for, for, for
My engine's ready to explode, explode, explode
So start me up and watch me go, go, go, go'

Hmmm...yes, the metaphor is very subtle!

Seamus Haji remix of Shut Up And Drive? Oooooo!!
20. August 8th 2008 @ 07:45. Stickman-X- Says:
theres no Seamus Haji mix for shut up, thats for Umbrella. there is a few mixes for Shut up. the best is probably the Wideboys club edit. there is also a very good mashup mix with New Order, its simply called The Booty Mix. im not sure who mixed this, but whoeva they r did a wikid job of it.
heres the links:

Righto, yeah I've heard the Haji remix of Umbrella, didn't do much for me, despite loving a lot of Haji remixes and originals
Personally I generally find mashups annoying, I'd rather mix the two originals live myself ... I'll see if I can track down the Wideboys mix cheers for the link
22. August 8th 2008 @ 08:26. Stickman-X- Says:
yeh im not much of a fan of mashups, neva really did it for me. having never heard New Order helped tho, as i didnt find it annoying hearing bits of both together.
you can find Wideboys on Clubland 12. i wasnt really familiar with Haji until i got the Sensation White 2007 cd. does he do many pop remixes? ill make sure to go check him out now.
23. August 8th 2008 @ 09:14. Bryn Says:
I prefer playing "underground" deep house, but on the funky/jazzy tip. I do like quality techier house which Seamus Haji does a bit of, but I don't have any time for the poppy electro sound, I find it too abrasive and it lacks any soul. I'm a huge fan of New Order pre-1987 (showing my age here). I still rate Blue Monday as one of the greatest pop electronic dance grooves of all time. So you must be quite young (or have lived a musically sheltered existence) if you've never heard New Order before ... ?
24. August 8th 2008 @ 09:50. Stickman-X- Says:
lol wel..ill make it my mission this weekend to get New Order then. yeh im only 17 and have only been into electronic music of all kinds for the last..year and a half..two years. im really into the harder styles of dance. Hard Trance, Hardstyle Psy Trance and the like, have been for a lil while. more recently ive really branched out n come to love almost all kinds of electronic music. however, i dont do pop.....thats where i draw the line lol. i can appreciate pop remixes tho....as long as the original song isnt too repulsive.
