Rhythmatism - by Cheryl J

Monk's Mood

I have returned from Vanuatu, fresh and renewed in my attempt to become as vain and bitter as possible. I have also returned with souvenirs. And a tan. And some mosquito bites. Ouch. Anyway, as I promised earlier, I shall post a jazz themed post this one time. I volunteer at a jazz radio station, a great little place with a whole three listeners - an old lady and her two cats. (If that same old lady happens to be Prince Charles, I wouldn't be the least surprised).

However, the album in question is a recently discovered one:

It was 'lost' after its recording in 1957 (I think that's the date - the drugs have taken my memory) and found again in 2005, when it was released to glowing reviews. John Coltrane is a jazz saxophonist, playing with jazz greats Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis (yes, I'll trot that out to sound pretentious and knowledgeable - it's funny how everyone listens to Miles Davis, but no-one actually knows what he does or what his music is like). However, his playing in this album is more like the sounds of his own great album Giant Steps.

Thelonious Monk was a jazz pianist, probably best known for the piece 'Round Midnight. However, my preferred composition of his is on this album, Blue Monk and Monk's Mood (sounds like a bit of an egotist really). Coltrane is especially good on this track, including what sounds as a reach towards the sort of free playing he'd do a decade later. Monk seems equally inspired, his own soloing is exciting and equally fiery.

I'm still unsure of how a recording like this can simply be 'forgotten' and lost. Yes, some things are quite easy to lose; I struggle with house keys, my grandparents struggle with their memory and Paris Hilton lost her integrity rather quickly, but this is an excellent album.

Kylar,

Interesting post. Any chance of a youTube video?

Re grandparents, put them on the computer, lead them to MS Paint and my Blogs and get them talking to you about your blog, other people's blogs youtubes etc, especially let them have a look at White Christmas recorded on my Blog, which is not only for children.

The more they use their mind, eat healthily and exercise the more their neural connections will grow and they can maintain and possibly improve their memory.

Don't you forget things too? Think about it.

Hey katyzzz

I found a youtube video. It's not of Carnegie Hall but Oslo in 1966. Click Here The video is of Blue Monk.

My grandparents already do use the computer/internet. It's cute to see them email their friends and swap photos. I forget things too of course...
