Sarah Palin - Barracuda has Heart Problems

It seems the use of the song "Barracuda" that has been used by the Republican Campaign has pissed off the song's writers' Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart. On Thursday afternoon, the band, Heart, emailed out a statement regarding vice-presidential candidate Sarah "Barracuda" Palin's use of their song at the Republican National Convention.

Following Republican Vice Presidential Nominee Sarah Palin’s introduction to the world, some have taken to calling her Sarah "Barracuda" Palin, which apparently presented an opportunity that the McCain/Palin Campaign could not pass up. Palin's nickname in high school was "Sarah Barracuda" which seems an odd nickname for someone who won the "Miss Congeniality" award.

The statement read, "The Republican campaign did not ask for permission to use the song, nor would they have been granted that permission, we have asked the Republican campaign publicly not to use our music. We hope our wishes will be honored."

But after McCain finished his speech accepting the GOP's presidential nomination and Palin joined him on stage, the song was used yet again. Heart's "Barracuda" played as balloons fell in the auditorium. Because of this, Heart's Nancy Wilson felt compelled to personally respond. "I think it's completely unfair to be so misrepresented," she said in a phone call to Entertainment Weekly after the speech. "I feel completely fucked over." She and sister Ann Wilson then emailed the following exclusive statement.

"Sarah Palin's views and values in NO WAY represent us as American women. We ask that our song 'Barracuda' no longer be used to promote her image. The song 'Barracuda' was written in the late 70s as a scathing rant against the soulless, corporate nature of the music business, particularly for women. (The 'barracuda' represented the business.) While Heart did not and would not authorize the use of their song at the RNC, there's irony in Republican strategists' choice to make use of it there."

It seems there is at least two Heart's that Sarah Palin has not won over.

**In a very funny ironic twist it seems that Sarah Palin may have won a beauty pageant but did NOT win the title "Miss Congeniality"...unless her name was Amy Gwin, who has come out and said that she can't imagine why Ms Palin would lie about something so trivial as winning a title she didn't in a backwater town. Hmmm, wonder what else she may be fibbing about?

ahh is the politics getting to you too Cheryl? haha

Heart should sue the Republican party for breach of copywrite, how extremely arrogant of them to continue to use the song!

one day in the deep distant future maybe there will be a politician who doesnt lie and cheat . . . maybe . . .

i just wrote some general political musings HERE

Hi Cheryl,

So, I guess maybe MNG's pic wasn't the swimsuit portion of the beauty pageant either.

It is a shame Heart doesn't like the Republicans it would open a few more opportunities for them. . .

They could use "Heartless". (No explanation needed)

"Secret", which is how they would have hoped to have kept her daughter's pregnancy. I still feel the only reason they said anything about it was because of rumors floating around that her youngest, Trigg, was actually her daughter's baby, and they needed to put a stop to that.

"Nothing At All" . . . the sum of what they said about where they stand on any of the issues during the convention, or since.

I agree with Morgan, they should sue them. After all, if they are breaking the law now, just imagine what they will do if they manage to get elected.

Hi Alt_ed, it seems a bit of a strange thing to lie about. Maybe she wants Sandra Bullock to play her in the hallmark movie of her life. But this is what was interesting about Ms Gwin's opinion:

Amy Gwin, 43, of University City, grew up in Alaska and competed in the Miss Wasilla, Alaska, competition in 1984 against GOP vice presidential choice Sarah Palin. Gwin was a year behind Palin, now 44, at Wasilla High School, which had about 800 students. Gwin said Palin was "a high school star in a good way," a beauty who got good grades and excelled at athletics. Gwin, who was president of her class, does not recall Palin holding school office. The Wikipedia entry on Palin said she was head of the school's Fellowship of Christian Athletes and captain of the basketball team. Gwin said she was not surprised when Palin became the governor of Alaska, but is astonished that she got the GOP nod for vice president. Asked whether she would support Palin because she knows her, Gwin said: "I wouldn't support her if she was my very best friend. I support Obama and don't share any of her (Palin's) politics." Gwin is the director of agency relations for the Rodgers Townsend advertising firm.

Hi Morgan, unfortunately this isn't the first time a political party has snagged a song without permission for use in their campaigns. But you would think they would at least have enough common sense to check if they were on the same page politically. Otherwise, like this, it blows up in their faces.

I'm not sure if it will go as far as a lawsuit but you never know...

I liked your post.

Hey TwoGuys, very well put together, you're a Heart fan from way back aren't you?! You mean MNG's photo is a fake?!?!

Well it wouldn't have taken long for her daughter's pregnancy to be noticed anyway. But they are obviously trying to turn an embarrassing situation to their advantage and it seems to be working. Personally I think the children of politicians (and anyone in the limelight) should be left out of things but when your mother is going to possibly in line for the position of the most powerful woman in the world it is inevitable. Look at how cruel everyone was to poor Chelsea Clinton.

What I think is sad about the daughter is yes, it is commendable she has chosen to keep her child, I think she may be forced into marrying the father for image purposes when they are too young to be ready for it. It would be nice if they had the time to let things play out naturally but that will never happen now.

It also goes to prove that the conservative stance, and that of her mother, in promoting abstinence only sex education doesn't work. She is walking proof of that, poor kid. Perhaps if she had more information on contraception she would not find herself in the unenviable position of being pregnant at 17 like so many American teenagers. And people will now use her as a political football. I wish her well. She's going to need it.

Back to the music issue, maybe they should sue and make a stand.

7. September 7th 2008 @ 11:05. Two Guys Sports Says:
I agree about kids being left out of stuff, but I don't see how THEY are suddenly saying it. I mean kids have always been splashed all over the news, TV, and tabloids. From the Kennedy kids, Nixon, Carter, Reagan, as you mentioned Clinton, and the Bush daughters. I just don't see how the parties can now suddenly say "ok the kids are off limits", now that one of the kids has a situation that plagues the nation and will be put in the limelight as an example for even more teens. Yet, when it was something like Reagan's daughter posing nude, or people ridiculing Chelsea's looks it was fine.

I did just realize I don't remember hearing much about W. Bush or his brother while the first Bush was VP or President. I guess being in politics themselves tey had their own PR people covering things up for them. lol

It also disturbs me that in an interview a few years ago Palin said that she was against abortion, even if her own daughter got pregnant during a rape. Well, that stance disturbed me even before she said it, but it is just another strike against her in my opinion.

Back to music, I am a big music fan in general, and the 80s was the best decade ever. Which is when a lot of Heart's stuff came out, which led to listening to their older stuff.

8. September 7th 2008 @ 12:00. Cheryl J Says:
Gene, the 80s had some major ups and downs in music...some of the best and some of the worst.

I wonder if the Republicans actually listened to the lyrics of the song before they chose it. The chorus is:

If the real thing don't do the trick
You better make up something quick
You gonna burn burn burn burn it to the wick
Ooooooh, barracuda

It's basically about making up anything that suits to get what you want. Definition of irony perhaps?
9. September 7th 2008 @ 13:08. RubySoho Says:
Not the first or even the second time the Republicans have triied to use a song in their campaigns whilst completely missing the irony.

In 1984 Reagan wanted to use Born In The USA and in 1988 Bush Snr tried to use Pink Houses by John Mellencamp.

Do these people actually listen to the lyrics?
10. September 7th 2008 @ 13:36. Cheryl J Says:
Hi Ruby, oh good lord! That's hilarious!
11. September 7th 2008 @ 13:46. RubySoho Says:
Yeah, I've actually been meaning to blog about that on Music Zone for a while now and never got around to it....I think you have reignited my enthusiasm.

I also didn't know about the meaning behind Barracuda, so thanks for that. I really love discovering the story behind the song.

Ruby & Cheryl,
you guys need to do a series on stolen political theme songs . . . i cant get enough of this trivia . . . i need more!
13. September 7th 2008 @ 14:38. Cheryl J Says:
Interestingly, I just read that Jackson Browne, a liberal activist since the No Nukes days, is suing the McCain campaign for copyright infringement for using his hit, "Running on Empty," in a negative ad about Barack Obama as he didn't give permission and because he is totally opposed to the Republican platforms raised in the advertising he feels they have damaged his reputation by implying he agreed with, and endorsed, them.

However, it's a very thorny legal bush. While the songwriter can try to claim copyright or Intellectual Property infringement, it is argued that songwriters routinely give blanket permission (via performing rights organisations) to venues throughout the country for performances of their songs by any act, therefore there is no real copyright violation occurring. I will be keeping a close eye on the Jackson Browne lawsuit.

Ruby, I'd love to read a post that goes into this is more depth.

Morgan, maybe we'll play devil's advocates with each other and post opposing view to see what happens. What do you think Ruby? ha!

The picture of Palin in bikini has been "Photoshopped" Before you post pictures and proclaim them as gospel, verify your source(s) and authenticity.
15. September 7th 2008 @ 17:46. Two Guys Sports Says:
Rich,

Mr. Nice Guy never proclaimed it as gospel. As a matter of fact he stated,

Please someone - tell me I'm wrong.

If you had read all of his comments that he got on that post you would see someone indeed showed the real picture to prove it was indeed Photoshopped.

Plus, I don't see the problem with the photo. It is well known she likes guns. I know someone had complained about her being in a bikini. So, here is a REAL picture of a fully clothed gun-toting Sarah Palin.

Of course the photos of Palin in a bikini were photshopped Rich, that was never in dispute and was a running gag through that person's blog. I don't however see what that has to do with this post. I have no photos of Sarah Palin in swimwear. I don't think you got the joke. I don't think Obama dressed as Borat either.

It. Was. A. Joke!

The picture I've used is a piece of art overlayed on a picture of Sarah Palin and I can guarantee you it was photoshopped. Perhaps you should leave a comment on a blog where it is relevant. Although if you want me to add a bikini, I'm more than happy to oblige.

Cheryl,

Now that you mention that I actually remember hearing about that Jackson Browne lawsuit on the news. He was not happy at all in the interview I saw. lol Can't believe I didn't remember it when I read this post. Must be the occasional senility hitting me.

Just in case anyone (and I mean anyone) is in any doubt - thought I throw this one into the mix - for the dummies - who may be a little confused about what's real and what's not.

Is she working the corner of Fairbanks & Main in that outfit?

Hi MNG

Now if she dressed and looked like that, the Republican Party would win hands down just from the panting men beating a path to the voting booths! Love it!

Now, if you figure out how to do a real life transplant of a head on that body, I'll put my order in now!

cheers

I think the Republicans are trying to get Hillary Clinton voters and I can't blame them there because the Democrats were fools not to give Hillary the nomination as she did end up winning the popular vote. I think that Heart shouldn't be complaining because it was helping them by millions of people hearing their song at the Republican convention and Sarah Palin isn't all that bad anyway, even though on the political side there are differences between Sarah and Hillary Clinton one thing they both have in common is that they are both fighters for what they believe in. I do however think that Republicans should respect the wishes of Heart, if they don't want their song used then they shouldn't use it.
22. September 8th 2008 @ 07:06. Cheryl J Says:
Hi Gene, I'm not familiar with the address but I think I get your drift

Anonymous, First, you are right to say that the Republicans are probably trying to win over Hillary voters who are upset that she was not nominated. However, Palin and Clinton are worlds apart in their platforms and no person who truly wanted Clinton would vote for Palin and if they did it is simply because they want a woman and couldn't give a stuff about the actual issues. People should vote for the party who has the policies they believe in and not be swayed by gender or race.

I think Heart is getting a lot of play out of this and yes, it's probably getting them noticed by a whole lot of people unfamiliar with their songs but I agree with you, they do not endorse the party and their wishes should be respected.

Thanks for your comment.

It even gets better ! Quote from Wikipedia: "Mike Fisher, Roger's brother, was set to be drafted and when he did not report for duty his home was raided but he slipped out a rear window and escaped to Canada" This happened in 1971.
The Fisher brothers were members of Heart from 1973..79. The band was officially founded 1973 (in Canadian "exile") and went (back) to US 1977 after Jimmy Carter granted amnesty to Vietnam draft evaders.
Does this story fit to the campaign of "war-president" McCain ?
If this is true or not, you can read this at Wikipedia. Obviously, the Republicans have bad intel...
