Rhythmatism - by Cheryl J

Rolling Stone

Our garden is currently being torn up by a company called Rolling Stones. I just finished reading Decembers Rolling Stone. Several days ago I watched a movie about the Rolling Stones. They're been and gone, and now, Kylar starts to enjoy the Stones, late as always (except where it counts!) I've always avoided the Rolling Stones for one reason or another, but when I was taking a browse of the local St Vincent de Pauls (shudder), I found a rather interesting tape; Some Girls. It, in a way similar to what Amanda Vandstone did for me and the Liberal Party, has launched me into a love of the Rolling Stones. It also helps that the original guitarist committed suicide, became hero and now is cool for cats.

I now have the infinite pleasure of presenting the Official Kylar Rhythmatism Favourite Rolling Stones Album List 2007, aka OKRFRSAL2.

#5: Let It Bleed

Why? Quite simply for two tracks: Gimme Shelter (with soul singer Merry Clayton - what a novelty name!) and You Can't Always Get What You Want. I remember my school choir several years ago singing this song. Ironically, or quite disturbingly, it was at an awards ceremony for the few best students. Unfortunately, the remaining songs are shoddy country music tracks that sound like fillers to me. I especially hate Country Honk. Country = Devil.

#4: Goats Head Soup

Why? Angie (thus confirming my obsession about David Bowie, as it was allegedly written about his wife). Also, the fact that the album is more consistent. I know that many critics have said that this album shows the Stones moving into a artistically-lean patch (Wikipedia LOVES that phrase), but I quite enjoyed his album, especially since there is less country shit, if I may use that word.

#3: Sticky Fingers

Why? Well it is THE essential Stones album, is it not? Andy Warhol cover, crude name, and of course, Wild Horses and Brown Sugar. It is also one album where I don't mind the rock-goes-country thing. It actually sounds like blues for a while. Yippee...

#2: Black And Blue

Why? Artistically lean. No. I love this album. It's Rolling Stones gone reggae and RnB. It's completely different, and as a bonus, devoid of Country Honk! I definitely love Hot Stuff and Fool to Cry, but also the reggae Cherry Oh Baby. Also, Kylar > Critics.

#1: Some Girls

Why? Oh yes: Miss You. The greatest Rolling Stones track ever. It's even better disco-rock than David Bowie's Diamond Dogs. This is what happens when you leave that awful country stuff to the inbreds, pure genius. The rest of the tracks are passable, especially Beasts Of Burden, although the single cover looks very, very inappropriate.

And now: In Brilliant Colour: MTV Presents - The Rolling Stones, Miss You.

Welcome backs appreciated.

Hehe!

Welcome back Kylar. I've got to admit I avoided the Rolling Stones for a long time too, but it was actually the inbred country crap that got me into them.

Sticky Fingers is a favourite (I don't know how they managed to make "Brown Suger" both sexist and racist, but that's rockstars for ya. Is there anything they can't do?). Exile On Main Street is a also a real grower and worth the persistence.

This coming from a guy who only owns those two albums and the early singles collection thingy. Don't go telling anyone though.

P.S. Rolling Stone magazine is the devil. Even more so than me.

I personally don't own any Rolling Stones CD's. I found a lot of tapes at the local op-shop though. Some Girls, Black & Blue and some more too. I really can't stand country music. I find that many of their albums have several great tracks, which is completely unrelated to country music, then the fillers, which are never released as singles, have that rock-country thing happening.

I quite like Exile On Main Street and Beggers Banquet et al., but these five albums are really quite good. Especially Miss You. What do you think of that?

P.S. I agree. I was in Woy Woy (middle of nowhere), and it was either that or Knitting World.

Welcome back Kylar,

Why can't I always have what I want, ooo those stones....so sexy....I used to think...give it all a miss nowadays,,,the sexpot...the sleeze.

I'll have some of the goat's soup. Whatever oh yes and a piece of cake from atop the record player and I'll leave you to arrange the music for me....just love a man who takes control [when I'm in the mood, that is] don't hold your breathe for too long and don't worry I like old men but not like Mike. Oh, no, no, no.

Rockin' tapes is pretty emo dude, but I've gotta admit I have a few tucked away that I should whip out next time I'm near a working tape player.

Will have to check out the others. Don't know if I can stomach Stones disco and reggae (is it anywhere near as bad as "D'yer Maker" by Led Zeppelin?) but I'll try anything once, hate it, then try it again just to see if I got the right impression, hate it, then try it again just to piss myself off and end up loving it.
8. January 23rd 2007 @ 09:50. Kylar Says:
Who's Mike?
And that cake looks spectacular, thanks for the comment.

No, tapes are not emo. Tapes were around before emo. Secondly, my friends cars don't have CD players, thus the need for tapes. Also, my tape collection goes pretty much: Stones, Beatles, Lennon and Fantastic 80's! Somehow, I can't see myself in black jeans, crying to that.

Click on the YouTube link. The video for Miss You is pretty damn funny.
