German Pop Star, 16, Becomes World's Youngest Transsexual

German teenager Kim Petras who became the world's youngest transsexual after undergoing an operation at the age of just 16 says she can't wait for the summer so she can try out a whole new wardrobe of tight fitting clothes and bikinis.

The pop singer - born Tim - is well known in Germany for having started hormone replacement therapy as part of her gender transition by the age of 12.

Now 16, she finallycompleted Gender Reassignment Surgery in November, according to a posting on her blog.

Dr Bernd Meyenburg who heads the Psychiatric Special Outpatient Clinic for Children and Adolescents with Identity Disorders at the University of Frankfurt Hospital said: 'Very few youth psychiatrists have any experience with transsexual developments. The families wander from one psychiatrist to the next.

'I was always against such operations on children so young but after seeing how happy one of my patients was and how well adjusted after returning from having the operation abroad while still a teenager – I realised that in some cases it is the right decision.
'Kim is such a case – she always knew what she wanted.'

Kim herself said: 'Everything has changed because of this operation. I just can't wait to put on my favourite bathing suit and go swimming like I've never done before.
'I had to wait until my 16th birthday but once that was past I was able legally to have the operation.

'I know that because of my past people will always bring up the subject, I can't get away from it. But I hope that one day I might be better known for something else like my music.'

In Germany, such operations are not usually allowed until the patient is 18.
However Kim managed to convince doctors when she was just 12 that she should have the surgery.

By 14 she was officially registered as a girl - and was already famous for her choice.
The costs of her procedure were covered by health insurance as her condition was officially diagnosed as an illness.

Dr Achim Wuesthof, an endocrinologist specialising in children and adolescents, who was treating Kim at a clinic in Hamburg, said that he and his colleagues felt that in this case it had been best to start earlier.

He said: 'To the best of my knowledge, Kim is the youngest sex change patient in the world.
'According to German law, two independent psychiatrists must confirm that the child is indeed transsexual and approve the sex change. Once that has been done, it is best to start as early as possible.

'Transsexuals experience the onset of puberty, and the physical changes it brings, as a serious trauma.

'But there is a general lack of empathy with cases like Kim's, mostly because people know little about the condition. Imagine a man that suddenly starts growing breasts or a woman that starts growing a beard against their will – that is how Kim and people like her experience puberty.

'They are not freaks, nor do they suffer mental illness. They are simply trapped in the wrong bodies. That is why it is best to help them as early as possible and reduce the trauma for them and their families.'

Last year Kim was signed to Joyce Records and released online her first single 'Last Forever'. It became a YouTube and MySpace hit.

In September - just weeks before the cosmetic surgery finalising her transition from a male to a female -she released her first commercially available single 'Fade Away' into the German market.

Kim said: 'I was asked if I feel like a woman now – but the truth is I have always felt like a woman – I just ended up in the wrong body.
'I had a problem because I couldn't wear skinny stuff, but now I can wear whatever I want to. I really am looking forward to going swimming like everyone else and to wearing tight jeans that show off my figure. They are so tight, I always felt quite uncomfortable in them until now.
'Now I can go as tight as I want to. I used to wear mini skirts too, but yes, now even the tight ones can be part of my wardrobe.
'I can enjoy swimming, and bikinis, go in the changing rooms without a problem, everything has changed because of this operation. I just can't wait to put on my favourite bathing suit and go swimming like I've never done before.'

Kim, who is now studying fashion design, began calling herself a girl when she was just two years old.

Her father Lutz said: 'I suppose it took me longer than my wife to accept it, but Kim is a very persuasive girl, she knows what she wants and how to get it.
'I am very proud of what she has achieved, how she has managed to get there and how she sticks to her dreams no matter how hard and painful they are to follow.'

It is difficult for me to imagine what it would be like to want to be the opposite sex the whole of your life. I think miost of us skirt with the idea at various points in our life but to be this serious about it?

It seems very young to make that decision at 12 because it is such a life-turning one but maybe Kim just never fitted in as a"boy".

Interesting post.

Life must be very difficult for those born into the wrong bodies and I truly believe that's what it is. I think most transgender people know from the very beginning things are no right.

America's ABC did an interview with a family with the most charming and well adjusted little girl (born a boy) and she is only 6 years old. The documentary was amazing. You can read the story and see her pictures HERE. It's well worth a look. Jazz seems certain she is a girl.

Hi Morgan, yes, finally a country with a progressive medical community that recognises this as a true medical condition. you should read the article I've linked to in the answer to Janet's comment. It's fascinating.

12 may seem early to make such a decision but I agree wil that some are born into the wrong body. I remember when I was about 7. You know how boys and girls take sides and compete??? This kid named Freddie as on the girls' turf. One of them said, "What are you doing here, Freddie?" He answered, "Don't you know? I'm a girl." For the record, his favorite color was pink, he ran like a girl and changed his name to Freda right before his sex change operation. Later on, he jumped out of a building. All true!!!!

She has fantastic parnets fo a start, and very careful and considerate doctors. It seems a shame, (having personally known many transexuals) that thye have to wait so long, often after 21, or 18 at least, to have the therapy to change sex.

It appears, from what I have been told, that the change is much easier when done younger, both physically and mentally, for the recipient, they can get on with their new lives, or the life that thye knew from the start was to be their path.

It is only people who do not understand that these people exist, that they still be judged, by comparison with the majority, whom tend to 'mature' mentally/sexually later.

As for myself, I thought about it, but only as a way to be accpeted more by men, as I am strictly gay.

cheers (and one last thought, the programme of gender re-assignment is much easier to bear than it was when some people I knew had it done.

Her music is pretty blah, but this is an incredible story and I"m happy to hear of she has been able to find a body that suits her better.

Hi James, I actually think by 12 you pretty much know your sexuality and you would certainly know if your body felt wrong. When you are very young there is a lot of gender confusion as in girls may feel like tomboys and little boys might want to wear their mum's make-up but I think much of that is experimentation. I think your sexuality is very much fixed by 12. My gay friends all pretty much knew that they had no interest in the opposite sex as soon as they were old enough to think about sex at all.

How sad for Freda. I think many transgender people do commit suicide because they feel unaccepted in either gender. I really think early intervention like in the case of Kim will give her a much better chance at a very happy and fulfilled life.

Hey Fog, I agree with you 100 per cent. This girl had a fantastic supportive family and you must think how difficult it must have been for them to come to terms with as well. In their minds, at least for a while, it would feel very much like they had lost their much loved son. The medical community over there must be far more open and advanced than here and the USA.

How interesting that you toyed with the idea, especially as I would think acceptance as a transsexual would be even harder than for gays. I can't for the life of me understand why anyone would judge a person for either. My mum is 71 years old, she thinks gay people are gay at birth and that transgenders are definitely born into the wrong bodies. I guess her wonderful outlook, especially for her generation, is what gave me mine.

I remember when gender reassignment was starting to be performed. The surgeries were horrific and the community shunned people left right and centre. An old friend of mine's dad was one of the very first gender reassignments in Australia. She became his 'aunt' and they all just got on with life although it was terribly hard for his mother to come to terms with, she never turned her back on her former husband and always treated her with respect.

I also worked in a nightclub with a sassy Thai girl named Carly, who was a stripper. She had the BEST body! But she told me of the pain and recovery of having it done and my heart went out to her that she had to suffer so much to gain what we all take for granted - the right body for our sex.

I think 16 is the best age to have it performed as the earlier they start the reassignment, the easier it is on your body and soul.

Hi Epiphanie, the music is not my thing either but it's very teen pop oriented so I think she will find a good audience. With the proper training and production she might just make it. I really hope her dreams come true, she's been through so much to try and achieve them.

No matter what choice that Kim have chosen, she must remember that there's no way back after it...

Still, I wish her all the best with her new life!

Hi Wilson, it is a very final decision but I think she sounds very much like she has always known it is right for her. Thanks for the comment.
