Hendrix in sex scandal 38 years after his death?!
US porn company, Vivid Entertainment, is reportedly releasing a 40-year-old amateur sex video that allegedly stars legendary musician Jimi Hendrix and two women. The LA based company and largest adult film producer stated that it obtained the tape from a collector. Although they say the tape has been authenticated, by an ex-lover and the notorious Cynthia ‘Plaster Caster’ (who is famous for making plaster molds of the appendages of many famous rock stars including Hendrix), the authenticity has already been disputed by a former girlfriend and a number of collectors and historians.
According to the NY Times, Kathy Etchingham, who was a steady girlfriend of Hendrix, has checked out stills taken from the film and said that the features of the man in the footage do not match. According to her the face and nose of the man are broader than those of Hendrix.
As we all know from the endless rounds of emails of the Paris Hilton and Pamela Anderson sex tape videos, celebrity sex is a profitable element of the adult entertainment industry. There have also been numerous look-alike hoaxes and without any of the parties involved in the making of the tape confirming its validity, who knows? The public certainly seems to thrive on these home movie celebrity sex videos, and coupled with a desire to know every salacious detail of dead celebrities, I have no doubt this will sell whether it is authentic or not.
Hendrix, one of the most influential guitarists in rock history, died in 1970. Although his drug use was well known and he was rumored to use heroin, LSD and amphetamines, Jimi died by inhalation of vomit caused by barbiturates, the sleeping tablet Secanol. There was no evidence of heroin in his blood and no needle marks.
Hendrix was known for his virtuosity with the guitar; he played a right-handed Fender Stratocaster upside-down and left-handed, developing a style known for using distortion and feedback. He was also one of the first musicians to experiment with stereophonic and phasing effects during recording.
In 2006, his debut USA album, Are You Experienced, was inducted into the United States National Recording Registry and Rolling Stone Magazine named him number 1 on their list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time in 2003. In 1992 he was posthumously awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement award.
Although he lived the ‘sex and drugs and rock and roll’ lifestyle, in my opinion the release of the tape, even if it is genuine, is completely tasteless and shows yet again that the public seems more interested in scandal rather than genuine talent.
